Compost Contamination

Asked January 24, 2017, 4:05 PM EST

A rat has tunneled under and into my plastic composter where I deposit kitchen waste. I've just bought a new one, a barrel type that is off the ground and, I think, hard for a rodent to get into. However, can I still use the compost in the old container in my vegetable garden or is it too contaminated? Thanks.

We tend to think the rat was feeding there, versus nesting there.
Our vegetable specialist says that your compost should be usable, but he suggests spreading it out and working it or tilling it into your soil. Don't mulch with it or make compost 'tea' out of it.
