Getting rid of rats?

Asked January 24, 2017, 11:25 AM EST

Found out during the snow that we have at least 2 brown rats in the backyard. We've modified how we feed birds so that there is no waste except for scattered seed. We have cats so am reluctant to use poison. Ideas? I live in urban Aloha area.

Thank you for trying to stop the rat problem. Key strategies include removing all food sources; removing water sources; and removing potential habitat such as piles of firewood and refuse. This will include closing down the feeder entirely for a matter of weeks. (Please contact the Audubon office (Portland, OR) to determine just how long to do so; 503-292-6855.)
