How to improve crop yield and how many times does a farmer apply fertilizer after planting? How many centimeters does planting of corn needed?

Here in Pennsylvania we plant corn about every 5" (13cm) apart in 30" (76cm) rows, of course this varies by climate and fertility. Much lower populations can be used where soils are poor or weather is dry. As for fertility, most fertilizer is applied just prior to planting, some at planting and then nitrogen is side-dressed after planting. Where manure is used, it is spread prior to planting and accommodates for most of the nutrient needs, then nitrogen is side-dressed.
