Tree Fungus or Eastern Tent Caterpillar larvae?

Asked January 17, 2017, 4:53 PM EST

Are these Eastern Tent Caterpillar larvae or tree fungus? I cut them off three different trees in my yard. As I'm sure that I will find more: If it was a fungus or growth, would it be okay to leave it on the trees?

This is black knot, a tree fungus that most commonly shows up on wild cherry trees, but can spread to domestic trees in the landscape. Here is info from our website: http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/black-knot-trees
