Hazelnut Trees

Asked January 14, 2017, 5:20 PM EST

Hi, Read in the Arbor Day newsletter about Hazelnut trees and was thinking it might good to plant a few in my yard. Is this native to Maryland? I ask because I planted one of those flowering pear trees and later found out they are invasive tree for Maryland. Thanks.

Hazelnuts may grow but may not produce nuts reliably. Hazelnuts are susceptible to Eastern Filbert Blight, a disease. Research and breeding is ongoing regarding cultivating hybrid hazelnuts for resistance to this disease.
Corylus americana, American hazelnut is native. We do not have research on cultivars.
