Brussels Sprouts

Asked January 14, 2017, 10:19 AM EST

For several years we have put Brussels sprouts in our fall garden. Our plants are still growing. They develop the heads along main stem, look great but the are not tight and solid. I buy plants from So States or Burpee, am I getting wrong type for this area, not enough water?

You did not mention when you planted. Brussel sprouts are a long season crop. Transplants should be planted by the end of July. Plants maturing in hot and dry conditions may develop bitterness or fail to form compact sprouts. The plants do not overwinter. You should harvest what you can and use. Look at our vegetable profile for more information on planting and cultivation
