Color aberrations in waterfowl

Asked December 14, 2016, 7:28 PM EST

I'm a freelance science writer, working on a project about local waterfowl. I've spotted a pale-colored mallard hen in nearby pond. Her coloring resembles photographs I've seen online of "blonde" or "apricot" ducks. Is this a result of leucism? Or some other genetic polymorphism?

We are not wildlife experts. The best recommendation is to contact the Dept of Natural Resources in Virginia. Here is their link and contact information https://www.dgif.virginia.gov/wildlife/

You could also speak with Dr. Parkhurst at Virginia Tech. He's the Virginia Cooperative Extension Wildlife Specialist. He can be reached at jparkhur@vt.edu or 540-231-9283.
