Chinquapin Pruning

Asked December 13, 2016, 6:36 PM EST

When and how much pruning can one safely do with Chinquapin Oaks? What are the risks of disease? How can they be minimized?

I guess my first question would be why are you pruning it? Typically we do not prune trees unless they are to close to buildings or for a reason similar to this. In these cases you can prune out what is in the way but otherwise I would not prune it. Relative to disease, the primary disease related to oaks is oak wilt and Chinquapin is one of the more resistant varieties of oaks. However, I would still paint the cuts with an aerosol paint just like you would any other varieties.
