This weed showed up in our rain garden this fall and I've seen it for the first time on some parts of the Columbia pathway just this fall also. It is NOT dock, skunk cabbage nor a plantain- or at least not ones I know. The leaves feel coarse like it has fine hairs not smooth like the plantain family. I have not yet seen it flower or seed out as it just showed up this year. I tried identifying it online and can't find it.
This looks like Canadian ginger ( Asarum canadense ) which is a wonderful native plant and a great groundcover. The flowers are unusual and hard to spot. Look on a search engine for plenty of rave reviews. Much better in Maryland than the European ginger. Here's a good website: http://www.wildflower.org/plants/result.php?id_plant=ASCA
You can also put it in our website search box.
