Howdy, I am looking for an expert opinion on a good grass seed to buy for an area in Bowie which will thrive in being mostly shaded with most water being from rain. It also should have a strong root system to stand up against grazing pigs and chickens on occasion. Please help out with any knowledge on the right grass Thanks

Bowie County Texas

Are you talking about a pasture grass or lawn grass. All grasses prefer full sun, the worst grass for shady ares are the bermuda grasses. You might consider bahia, it's tough, drought resistant and in a drought, will or should come back between rains. It is not a preferred grass with cattle, but can and does perform well when cut and managed right, for both grazing and hay production.

The shade deal is a question, again, ALL grasses prefer sun, if you are talking about lawn grass, the most shade tolerant warm season grass is by far San Augustine and will need to be planted by sod. Centipede is a close second and can be planted by sod or seed. Both do better in sun, San Augustine is not that drought tolerant.
