tri colored willow bush

Asked November 29, 2016, 8:06 AM EST

The first tri colored bush I had got hit by a car and by the next spring was dead on that side. I tried trimming it but it was not working so I planted another one. Now this one has been hit by a fuel truck. I thought that if I trimmed it right away it would do better but I see half the leaves on the bush are dying. Can i save the bush?

I believe you are talking about a dappled willow (Salix integra 'Hakuro Nishiki'). The dappled willow is a tough plant; however, since I can't see the damage that was done by the fuel truck, I can't give you a positive answer. It is not a problem that the leaves are dying as the plant will send up new shoots from its base next spring. Remove all of the damaged and dead wood in March to encourage the development of new shoots.
