Pruning Crepe Myrtle Natchez

Asked November 17, 2016, 2:43 PM EST

I have several crepe myrtles lining my driveway. They're doing well. So well, some limbs are beginning to block in and out. Should I wait until spring to trim back? Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks,

Summer-blooming shrubs are usually pruned in early spring. This leaves time for them to form flower buds for summer blooming.

Technically your can prune them whenever they are dormant in the winter, but the pruning cuts will not heal as quickly then as they will in early spring.

Here is a good concise fact sheet about pruning trees and shrubs: http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG84_Pruning%20ornam...
