List of Plant Description and their recommended maintenance guidelines

Asked November 15, 2016, 10:11 AM EST

What is a good source of information on plant descriptions and maintenance guidelines? I have a list of plants with Botanical and Common names and I looking for information on appearance and maintenance. Ex: Abelia grandiflora "Little Richard" (Little Richard Dwarf Abeila). Thanks.

Your best bet is to google the entire Latin name with the cultivar name and look for sites that are associated with universities. You may not find the specific cultivar discussed by a university, but the care of the species will apply to the specific cultivar. This is not to say that sites associated with sales organizations are not generally good and accurate. We only suggest that if a site associated with a university is available, use it. For example, the Missouri Botanical Garden is a good source of information. http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=j150 Also the University of Connecticut is good. http://hort.uconn.edu/detail.php?pid=11

If you are looking for information about woody plants, Michael Dirr's Manual of Woody Landscape Plants is an excellent source of information. The most recent edition should be available in your local library. vw
