Kousa Dogwood looking bad

Asked November 2, 2016, 8:13 AM EDT

I'm not sure why the tree looks so bad. I watered well last week. Why do the leafs look so bad? Could it be just a water issue or is there some type nutrient / fertilizer needed? Or could it be some type of pest?

Frederick County Maryland drought trees drought scorch on kousa

We think this is scorch damage from periods during the season that were hot and without rain. Drought can cause such a reaction. Kousas have shallow root systems.
It is not concerning this late in the season, and it is common for leaves to look somewhat ravaged after a long season anyway. They will drop soon.
If we go through a period of dry, droughty weather next year, we recommend supplemental water.
