Apartment Food Storage

Asked October 29, 2016, 7:51 AM EDT

I live in an apartment in the suburbs of DC. My parents are coming in from the country next weekend and bringing me large quantities of produce: at least half a bushel each of apples and squash. My question is, how best to store those I can't eat quickly? I have a large east-facing balcony, and would ideally like to did some way to store them outdoors. I have heard of people using sand boxes in root cellars to store some kinds of produce. Would that be possible outside and/or appropriate for these crops? If not, what might you suggest? Thanks,
