American Pokeweed (phytolacca Americana)

Asked October 28, 2016, 7:37 AM EDT

We have a serious problem with this plant in our back yard. We did not know what it was and instead of planting our vegetable garden this year, we let the "named weed above" get out of control. I JUST found out what it even is and evidently it is very poisonous. we don't know what the best way to get rid ot it would be. Can you help advise us please?

2 Responses The key to pokeweed elimination is persistence. Keep it pulled up or hit with a broadleaf herbicide or glyphosate (active ingredient in RoundUp). Herbicides will work better in the fall than in the spring. More than one application may prove necessary. As soon as you see the first baby leaves emerging, pull it. vw

thank you for your help.
