Can you tell me what this plant is?

Trying to identify the plant in the picture - it looks like a type of grass/bamboo. These plants are about 8 ft tall yet were completely mowed down this past June. Ones that were not mowed down are easily 12+ feet tall and the stems are 1-2 inches across. They are all over on a 12 acre property we own in the heart of Jacksonville, FL. Thank you!

Hi - From a distance, this appears to be common reed (Phragmites australis). This reed typically grows in shallow water, or at least very wet soils. http://plants.ifas.ufl.edu/plant-directory/phragmites-australis/

It's possibly another reed species such as Silk Reed (Neyraudia reynaudiana) http://www.freshfromflorida.com/Divisions-Offices/Plant-Industry/Bureaus-and-Services/Bureau-of-Ento... or giant reed (arundo donax) http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ag307.

You can take a plant to your Duval County Extension office to get a more certain identification. http://duval.ifas.ufl.edu/staffpage.shtml
