pruning a tree

Asked October 22, 2016, 11:29 AM EDT

I have a 7 year old Uncle Harry's Landers walking stick tree that needs to be pruned. How and when do I prune it???? It is about 8 Ft tall and 8 Ft wide and very dense. Most people I have talked to do not know about this type of tree.

Baltimore County Maryland

Corylus avellana 'Contorta' - Let the shrub develop naturally removing only dead, diseased, damaged, or crossing growth. Once established light pruning can be done to restrict size, accentuate its form, or to thin growth. Prune any understock suckers coming from the base. Time to prune is late winter.
These shrubs eventually succumb to eastern filbert blight http://extension.psu.edu/plants/green-industry/news/2015/eastern-filbert-blight-an-old-disease-makin...
