American toad hibernation

Asked October 19, 2016, 12:08 PM EDT

We have a large American toad seemingly hunkering down for the colder weather in a flower pot on our deck. We move this pot into a shed for the winter. Should we leave the toad where he is or remove him from the pot? He has devoured slugs in our garden and we would love for him to return next spring if possible. Thanks, Judy Ledford
