Fall lawn care

Asked October 15, 2016, 11:12 AM EDT

What should be done to a lawn in the Oct. Nov. time frame? My fescue lawn has become overrun with weeds and crabgrass.

hello,

Here is a link to our publications on lawn care:

First, I would recommend conducting a soil test to see what the pH and nutrient levels are. You can do that through our office for a $10 fee. Here is how to collect a soil sample: https://extension.tennessee.edu/publications/pages/default.aspx?k=soil%20testing&cs=This%20Site&...

For crabgrass, you will need to apply a crabgrass preventer late winter/early spring. Crabgrass reproduces by seen and so the plant itself is dying or dead at this time of the year. Bermudagrass will go into full dormancy after our first heavy frost or freeze.

Usually one application is made around the end of February and then a second application 6 weeks later to control other annual grasses.
