Termites above 7,000 ft in altitude

Asked October 14, 2016, 10:41 AM EDT

I am building a home north of Gunnison, Colorado at an elevation of 9,000 ft, heating largely with firewood and intend to stage firewood out of doors on either landscape timbers or true pressure treated 4 x 4's. The cost difference is substantial and I prefer using landscape timbers if termites are "not" a concern. What can I expect from termites at this altitude ?

We have termites in Colorado of several varieties. The CSU fact sheet is at http://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/insects/termites-5-532/. Most termites in Colorado are found below 7,500 feet according to research but you must prevent introducing them to a homescape. We do have a number of other boring insects in the mountains. Please check with the County Planning Department as to home safeguards for insects. Fact sheets on building homes in the mountains including insect issues are available at http://csfs.colostate.edu/csfspublications/ .
