Mushrooms all over my yard

Asked October 10, 2016, 7:40 PM EDT

I have mushrooms that look like rocks - very low growing and are hard on the top. Whne I mow over them brown dirt flies all over and it appears to be spreading the problem. They are all over my front and now spreading to the back yard. What is causing this? Is it a big problem? How can I get rid of these? Thank you!

Hello,

Thank you for your question.

The "brown dirt" is dispersed fungal spores.

Mushrooms growing on your yard are harmless, but if you wish to get rid off them, pick them up without pressing them hard as to not disperse more spores.

Chances are that (microscopic) fungal spores are already everywhere, and that you will continue to see more mushrooms as long as the environmental conditions (temp, humidity) are favorable for germination.

Hope this helps.
