What do I do with new spears that emerge in early October? I cut the ferns back to ground level about 10 days ago and now new spears are shooting up rapidly. These plants were planted 2015 from a tray of established ones that said they should produce harvest crops in 2 years (2016?).

Asparagus spears will not mature this late in the year. If spears are coming up it is due to the very warm weather we are having. Put a little dirt or compost around the plant and it should be alright until spring. Also remember it takes Asparagus 3 years to become established and full production.
