What plant is this?

I recently moved to Ogden, and pruned the holly bushes outside the east side of the house. I formed them into lollipop trees clearing the space underneath that hadn't seen the light of day for years. After a month or two this started sprouting up and looks like it might be original ground cover. Not sure.

I believe the plant you are describing is actually a weed called wild violet (Viola papilionacea). It is considered difficult to control. Here are some links to websites with more information about it:
