Planting a Red Bud plant

Asked October 7, 2016, 4:12 PM EDT

My plant is in the pot. I am planning on planting next couple of weeks. I am wondering if I may cut the branches before I plant, which is spreading wide. Will that harm the plant(or die). Your answer is greatly appreciated . Thank you very much.

Here is a great resource for planting https://www.arborday.org/trees/planting/containerized.cfm and then from here you can follow their link to a pruning guide which I think will be helpful to you (it's a quick and easy read with quite a few visuals).

Go ahead and plant and remove any dead wood. But, then I'd leave it alone and allow it time to adjust and get settled. In a few months, this winter, shape as needed (taking care not to remove too much - do not remove more than 1/3 of the healthy wood).
