Winter Wrapping of River Birch

Asked October 7, 2016, 10:09 AM EDT

Hi: We planted two River Birch trees in our yard this summer. The trees are currently 8' high. It is recommended that we wrap each stem before winter? Thank you!

Wrapping the trunks is advisable. The bark of immature trees is often thin and subject to damage by animals, abrasion and harsh winter conditions. Remove the wrap in summer.

Wrap will not be needed after the trunks have developed the thick, exfoliating bark typical of mature river birch
