Inch to 1.5 inch black hard winged moth looking insect

What is This?

Yes, it does resemble a moth. But that’s not so because moth wings are covered with colored scale unless they are on a clear-wing moth.

I will reassign your question to another expert who is more likely to have the answer. Please be prepared to tell him where you saw the insect and the approximate what date.





This is a cicada. Many species are black with different color highlights. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada for some general info.


I do not agree that this is a cicada. The wing venation and hairiness of the body legs is not consistent with that family of insects.
