Besides removing the source of the fruit flies, there is an easy way to trap them. Partially fill a narrow necked bottle (a small vase for a single flower works well) with vinegar. Take a small piece of paper and make a funnel. Put that in the neck of the bottle. The fruit flies are attracted by the smell of the vinegar but once in the bottle they cannot find the small opening at the end of the funnel to get out and they die.
