Erupting roots of cottonwood tree

Asked September 30, 2016, 10:56 AM EDT

Is it possible to cover the erupting roots with soil and then seed grass over them in the eventual time of being able to mow the area more successfully without damaging the tree roots themselves? (for my neighbor because I'm not sure and hope someone at extension can help)

Some tree roots do come to the surface and that is where they are meant to be. We do not recommend covering with soil or sod. The root will just come up higher to get closer to the situation it needs. Grass doesn't grow well under trees anyway. We recommend that any remaining grass be removed and mulch applied to the area. It will make the tree happy and prevent the frustration by the homeowner.
