Male deer will mark their area by rubbing their antlers on young trees in early fall and again in the spring. If you live in an with a heavy deer population you should protect the trunk by encircling the tree with deer netting or wooden stakes. You did not mention what specific shrubs you purchased, deer will feed on certain plants all year long. The attached publication will inform you as to their favorite plants and the use of deer repellentshttp://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/non_HGIC_FS/FS655.pd....
Be sure that your plants are well watered before the ground freezes.
