Control insect pest on pyracantha

Asked September 26, 2016, 12:37 PM EDT

Have several pyracanthas which suddenly developed a large number of white insects (appears to be larva stage) on the branches (see photos). Do I need to control these insects and how? Pyracanthas are about 25 years old, have orange berries, are 15 feet high but unknown species.

Montgomery County Maryland pyracantha shrub possible woolly aphids

Based on your photos this looks like woolly aphids on the stems. They are a sucking insect. Try knocking them off with a hard spray of water from the hose. Do this several times. See our website http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/woolly-aphids-trees-and-shrubs
