Fruit producing plant

Asked September 22, 2016, 10:35 PM EDT

I have came across this particular fruit in forestry areas and mostly along roadsides. it looks and smells like a pepper of some sort on the inside. I wish to know what it is and if it is edible.

DO NO EAT THESE FRUITS! This is a rather large specimen of Horse nettle (Solanum carolinese). Plants in the genus Solanum are commonly known as the Deadly Nightshades and for good reason. The fruits are poisonous to animals and people.

In Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet, Juliet drank a potion containing deadly nightshade to simulate death. STEER CLEAR!
