What is this bug??

Asked September 21, 2016, 5:35 PM EDT

I have lived in this home for 12 years - haven't had this problem before. In the past couple of weeks, I have seen an infestation of a small flying insect both inside my shop (a pole-barn style building - metal) - and also now in my house. The body is about 4 mm - wings extend beyond maybe another mm. There are literally hundreds of them in both buildings - they congregate at the windows - seeking exit, I assume. Could you tell me what this critter is, and maybe how I can avoid a repeat of their presence?

This is a winged ant. Not carpenter ants but from your description of numbers I'd guess odorous house ants. There's likely a large nest in the barn and/or house. Large colonies generally need professional baits to eliminate (see http://www.livingwithbugs.com/ant_bait.html, note: this is my personal website, your county Extension office may have additional information).
