Plum tree damage

What do you is going on with this young plum tree? Animal damage? I just noticed it in mid September. We have rabbits, squirrels, and dogs, but no other animals in our yard to my knowledge. The picture is near the base of the trunk. I have since surrounded it with a hardware cloth cage.

i think we can rule out dogs and rabbits but not squirrels . the hardware mesh should do the trick. i would also wrap the tree in late october with fruit tree wrap to protect the south and west sides from sun scald. i do this on all fruit trees and remove the wrap in april. this is a very thing so save the wrap back if it is not too torn up.
