pruning shrub roses

Asked September 19, 2016, 12:30 PM EDT

I have always pruned my shrub roses in the spring. Lately, I have read they should be pruned in the fall? We live in extreme southwest Minnesota. When is a good time and how severe?

I don't know who is recommending that you prune in the fall but your spring pruning is the correct one. We do not recommend any pruning of any sort this late in the season as it will promote new growth which doesn't have time enough to harden off before winter. That new growth will be dead in the spring. Continue with your good practice of spring pruning. Cut out any dead branches and you can then cut back by 1/3rd.
