Will my pumpkins survive?

Asked September 19, 2016, 12:16 PM EDT

My Jack be Little pumpkin leaves had leaf mildew/mold (I think) so I cut most of the leaves off. Will my pumpkins survive without the leaves? What can I do to prevent this from happening again next year?

The plant cannot function without the leaves. If you have pumpkins on the vines, stop removing the leaves. Keep the plant watered at the base of the plant and they may survive. Powdery mildew is a common host of pumpkins. See our profile on powdery mildew. Pull up and remove all plant debris at the end of the season. Look for resistant varieties next year. http://vegetablemdonline.ppath.cornell.edu/Tables/TableList.htm
