Tree Planting

My husband and I are building a home and we can choose 2 trees for the builder to plant for us. The soil is heavy clay. We like Autumn Blaze Maple. What else would you recommend?

Here is a great website to help you narrow down the choices:

Also, see:

Besides soil texture, some other considerations are amount of exposure, potential surface root problems, messiness, and your purpose for the tree (shade? fall color? winter interest?). I might also suggest a visit to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. They have many of the trees suggested in the documents above so you can see what they look like.

FWIW: while 'Autumn blaze' is a good tree, there are some really attractive underused trees available: Kentucky coffee tree, ginkgo, hophornbeam (ironwood) are three.
