Identifying vegetable

Asked September 17, 2016, 4:24 PM EDT

Plant just started to grow in field with sweet potatoes, water melons and yellow squash. As you can see this plant gets pretty big in size. Is it a squash or some kind of cucumber? The vine runs like a cantaloupe or cucumber, leave is about 8-9 L&W, flower is white

Calvert County Maryland volunteer cucurbit vegetable

This looks like a volunteer vegetable. The fruit is the result of cross pollination between two or more cucurbits that you grew in your garden (or were grown in a nearby garden) last year. It is not unusual for the seeds of such crosses to produce unusual fruit that do not resemble either parent fruit, and may display some characteristics of a distant ancestor.
