Gold colored dust from my yard

Asked September 17, 2016, 3:22 PM EDT

Hi. When I am cutting my grass, a gold colored dust accumulates on my mower and shoes. It's not a problem - more of a curiosity. What is the cause of this? I have been cutting my same lawn for 27 years and this is the first season that I remember seeing this. I haven't watered my lawn all summer, so I don't think that it is rust from my well water. I don't have a lawn irrigation system. I water my yard with a hose and sprinkler only if it gets very dry.

It sounds like rust. Take a look at : http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/diagnose/plant/turf/irregular/spots.html

The University of Illinois has some good tips on avoiding/treating it:

With your sound care, it may disappear as we move into Fall.
