Moth in Garden

Asked September 16, 2016, 2:05 PM EDT

Greetings!

Late one afternoon back on August 18 I was taking photos of my Rain Garden, the various blossoms and any bugs I could photograph with the hope of learning more about my little eco-system. I saw this moth attached to a vine that had grown up around one of my Swamp Milkweed plants. Not having seen such a moth before, I thought I would consult the experts through the extension offices.

Can you help me identify this moth?

Sincerely,
Wanda J. Kothlow

I had to go to our expert who said It could be a notodonid moth, http://mothphotographersgroup.msstate.edu/pinned.php?plate=21&size=l&sort=h but it is difficult to tell from the picture.

Goes to this link, and click on individual pictures to see more pictures of the moth (including those taken from the side) plus where it has been reported. There is a filter at the top of the page that allows a person to search a particular state if you wish.
