We are being bitten by flies this year. We have never had this issue before. We live on Fishing Creek off the Bay and this year the fly problem is terrible. We cannot walk our dogs without a dozen or more flies landing on them is there anything we can do to get rid of this nuisance?
The good news is that, if this has not happened before, then it may be a one time occurrence. The weather may have been just right to encourage this biting fly's reproduction, or the weather may have suppressed the insects and/or diseases that usually keep down the population of the fly. It's also possible that somewhere nearby insecticides were sprayed that killed the beneficial predator insects that normally kept down the biting fly population.
Other than that, has something in the environment changed where you lived? More standing water or manure? In that case, the environment must be changed.
Meanwhile, use bug repellents on yourselves and your dogs. Contact your veterinarian for help with the dogs.
If you can send us photos of the specific flies, we can be more specific about what breeds them.
