Basil is dying

Asked September 8, 2016, 9:02 AM EDT

My basil is dying. It flourished all summer but in the last few weeks it's turned light green with a lot brown spots. The underside of the leaves have a black powdery substance on them. I have several basil plants in the ground and they all look like this. The basil I have in pots are doing just fine. I was out of town and not able to water the basil for about a week, but obviously this has occurred over a span of more than a week. Thank you for any advice you can offer!

Looks like your basil has downy mildew. Cut the plants down to the ground and avoid moisture on the leaves that regrow. http://extension.umd.edu/ipm/commercial-greenhouse-production/downy-mildew-basil-and-coleus vw
