I'm in Pines Knoll Shores, eastern NC. The sulfa butterflies are out in force. For years as far back as I can remember, I only see them flying east all day long. Why is this?

I'm not sure why they would be flying east. This time of the year they should be flying South to reach the warmer winters in Florida. Here is a website from Florida that should help explain the migration.
