There are many reasons why cherry trees die. Diseases, such as bacterial canker can kill the tree, over watering or gophers eating the roots, can cause mortality. The first thing to do would be to make a critical assessment of the tree to see if there are any cankers on the trunk or other noticeable abnormalities. Cankers will probably have an ooze coming out of them. If you see this and the overall tree is dying there is probably very little that you can do. If it is simply a branch that is dying, cut off the branch. If you don't see anything like a canker, then you could try to give it a tree fertilizer (there are some fertilizer stakes available). Unfortunately, once a cherry tree begins to lose leaves and die, there is little that can be done.
