Dead and dying birch trees

Asked August 31, 2016, 9:27 AM EDT

I recently was driving along the North shore of Lake Superior (Hwy 61) and noticed that in many areas the birch looked bad! Many of the tops of these birch were gone (broken off??) and seems some or most of these may of been dead too! Can you answer our question? We were just driving by and did not stop to take a closer look.
