How to prune Christmas Cactus plant?

I have a Christmas cactus plant that has gotten big & need to know how it can be pruned (hopefully it can!). Have never had one & not familiar with them.

Thank you for using Ask an Expert. You can prune your Christmas cactus, but it is best to do after blooming and no later than spring time. At the time of pruning you can either quickly twist a segment to pull it off or use a pair of sharp scissors to remove the segment. After you removed the segments you can easily root them and share a new plant with your family and friends.
Once a year it is a good idea to prune the cactus by 1/3. This will make the cactus fill out and grow outwards. I hope this information is helpful to you. Good luck!!
