Ash whiteflies in Portland

Asked August 28, 2016, 2:25 AM EDT

Last year we were tortured by clouds of annoying whitefles all summer. This year I haven't seen any significant numbers at all Where'd they go? My understanding is that they were only recently introduced inyo Oregon. Are we rid of them now?

Thanks for your question about the whitefly. . (I'm assuming you are referring to the ash white fly infestation that got so much attention in 2014 and 2015). Happy, Oregon State University reports that ash whitefly predators and parasites have been discovered, which are reducing their population. Here's a link to the history of the pest, and a little more in depth article, complete with pictures of the pest and its enemies.

It may take a few seasons, but eventually every insect attracts another insect (among others) that wants to eat it!
