What is this Fungus?

Asked August 23, 2016, 6:11 PM EDT

This beautiful fungus is growing out of the dirt under an azalea bush. The stump of a large tree we took down about five years ago is 6-8 feet away. Does this fungus have a name? Is it related to the fungus on the stump? Is it causing any harm? Thank you.

This is a fungus commonly known as turkey tail. It is not a pathogen, so it did not kill your tree, nor will it endanger any other plants. It is part of the decomposition process that begins as soon as any wood dies. It lives on dead plant material and breaks down the wood.
