What kind of houseplant is this?

Asked August 19, 2016, 9:16 PM EDT

I got a few stems from a friend and started them, but he didn't know what kind of plant it was. It is doing very well, but I'd like to know the species and if it may be poisonous to pets. It looks similar to a wandering jew, but with hairy leaves.

This plant is called Tradescantia. People do call it "wandering Jew", but that common name is applied to a variety of plants. Here is a page from the ASPCA about this plant and indicates it can casue dermatitis (it shows a non-fuzzy variety, but it is the same plant). http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/wandering-jew

The ASPCA website has a very good webpage on plants and pets: http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

If you think your pet may have eaten a plant, be sure to contact your veterinarian immediately.
