Composting leaves

Asked August 17, 2016, 6:07 PM EDT

I have a Hackberry that has nipple gall, and a Sugar Maple that has leaf spot. Will Ibe able to use these leaves for composting? Thanks

Ramsey County Minnesota

The insects that inhabit the nipple galls emerge before the leaves fall so it's OK to compost the leaves.

It's OK to compost leaves with tar spot at home too if the pile temperature gets high enough to kill the disease organisms. Otherwise send the leaves to a community compost site.
